Powertec is the result of an intensive co-operation between Tom Steels and Dirk Breynaert.
Tom Steels is a former cycling champion. After successes in the youth categories, Steels made his debut as a pro at the age of 23 in the team Vlaanderen2002. In his further career, he was riding for Mapei, Lotto and Landbouwkrediet. He won 78 professional races, amongst which 9 stages in the Tour de France, classic victories in Gent-Wevelgem, Omloop Het Volk and Dwars door Vlaanderen, 4 Belgian championships and stages in the Vuelta and Paris-Nice. During his career, Tom tested Powertec for 7 years. This made it possible to finetune and extend the system.
Dirk Breynaert (Civil engineer in Electronics, University of Ghent, 1975) is the founder and director of NV Newtec Cy, a high tech company that develops satellite communication systems and sells them worldwide (turnover 2008: 42M EUR). Dirk is passionate about cycling and is the brain behind the software. The reason to develop Powertec was a conversation of Dirk with Ferdi Van Den Haute (ex-pro, now cycling trainer). Ferdi complained that it was not easy to follow up different cyclists on a daily basis. During this period, power meters came onto the market. Dirk started to work and developed Powertec based on his professional background (to develop models by means of data). Dirk aimed to create a simple, practical and understandable system. Powertec perfectly matches these requirements. Because of his passion for cycling and under the motto ‘measuring is knowing’, Dirk continues searching for new means to perfect cycling training. At this moment, his research is focussed on revolutionary dynamic measuring methods in the field of cycling aerodynamics. To be continued…
